In his final season as a Chicago Bull, Michael Jordan pauses before in-bounding the ball in a game against the Los Angeles Clippers. Jordan scored 49 points in the game that was finally won in double-overtime.

Against the Golden State Warriors during the 1998 season, Jordan stood alone at the opposite end of the court while a teammate shot free throws in the closing seconds of a tied game. All eyes were on him, while his team won the game by 1 point.

This grand slam, with 2 out in the 8th inning not only beat the Padres but tied him with Mark McGwire , for a day, with one more homerun than the previous record set by Roger Maris 37 years prior.

Tony Gwynn
Considered to be the best hitter since Ted Williams, San Diego Padre Tony Gwynn connects for a base hit, during the 1999 season, on his way to 3,000 hits in a career. Gwynn became the 22nd player to reach the hitting milestone in a career that year.

Opening Day
On Opening Day of the 1998 San Diego Padres' season manager Bruce Bochy discusses the ground rules, with the National League umpire crew, of Qualcomm Stadium in San Diego. The Padres went on to play in the World Series that year loosing to the New York Yankees.

Utah Jazz 16-year veteran forward Karl Malone shoots and scores the 31,420th point of his career, surpassing the great Wilt Chamberlain for second place all-time on the NBA scoring list on December 5, 2000.

Deer Valley ski resort is the host to many summer sporting events, including this race down the front face of the mountain. The course included narrow tracks through trees, catwalk drop-offs, and a full speed downhill jump that landed the riders underneath a road overpass.

Settled by the Mormon religion in 1847, Utah's Salt Lake Valley has been the world wide head quarters for the church ever since. As a symbol of the religions faith in their God elaborate temples are constructed as centerpieces of most major Mormon communities.

Chin Yung
Illegal immigration concerns for California come from more than just the international border with Mexico. Smuggling operations from China bring immigrants to North America by way of cargo ships. This vessel, the Chin Yung, was detained about 50 miles off the coast of San Diego. It contained 140 Chinese nationals seeking entrance to the United States.

Dying Sea
Federal biologist Ken Sturm walks along the edge of Mullet Island in the Salton Sea near Calipatria, California. The island was the habitat of a colony of an estimated 1,700 double crested cormorants that were decimated by an outbreak of avian botulism. The botulism is believed to have been introduced into the birds' systems from their diet. An estimated 60,000 tilapia fish, a staple of the cormorant's diet, also died from the outbreak.

Vermillion's Castle
The uniqueness of the geography of southern Utah provide spectacular venues of eroding mountain ridges. The red coloring of the rocks is due to iron deposits found in the terrain. In some regions the rocks are purple from Magnesium and white from pure lime stone.
