Smoke from the worst fire disaster in California history turns the setting sun into a yellow fireball glowing in a deep red and purple sky backdrop to a long surfer enjoying the well-shaped,  though small, evening glass-off.

Black Francis , founder and lead singer for the 80's band "The Pixies" performs for a video taped segment for the Miller Genuine Draft "The Series" at the Belly Up Tavern in Solana Beach.  To show motion in his guitar strumming hand I shot this image at a 1/10th of a second, hand held.

A 200' x 240' hole in Mount Soledad Road is the most obvious result of a massive landslide that damaged or destroyed 15 homes and forced the evacuation of another 111 homes in the area.  The slide occurred in the very exclusive and very valuable Mount Soledad area of La Jolla.

Tennis legend Tracy Austin participates in a day-long promotional tour on the U.S. Open Series Bus through Los Angeles.  The marketing campaign was a test event for an extended nation wide tour scheduled for next summer to generate interest leading up to the U.S. Open tennis tournament in New York.
The 74 year old North Torrey Pines bridge, in Del Mar, Ca., was deemed "structurally deficient" after receiving a 15 out of a possible 100 during it's CalTrans Department inspection.  It is the lowest rated span out of 1500 in California yet is considered still safe for over 20,000 vehicles to cross a day.

Children's ability to learn and excel at the practice of Yoga Techniques provide a healthy alternative to therapy and medication to control fluctuations in mental development and emotional stability.
The bell tower of Hepner Hall on the campus of San Diego State University maintains a link to the school's original Mission Style Architecture.
Iconic rocker Rob Zombie performs his live act as more of a vaudeville show than a rock concert.  Stage displays including walking robots, carnival caricatures, animated clips, and re-runs of The Munsters TV show  are only a prelude to his finale of tarring-and-feathering his audience by spraying orange soda and confetti over the entire crowd.

Elizabeth Smart's father, Ed, addresses members of the media from around the world announcing her safe return after being abducted and held for 9-months.  I attended almost daily press conferences held by the family and was assigned to cover her return by The USA Today.

Former Mexican President Vicente Fox talks with a supporter after attending a breakfast hosted by local Mexican business leaders during his trip to Salt Lake City in May 2006. After shooting his arrival and introduction at the table inside the media was herded into the back of the restaurant and restricted to not shoot until after they finished eating. After about an hour I decided to go out front and photograph him as he departed.  Before getting into his police-escorted limousine caravan he stopped to talk to a woman holding a sign of support standing next to me.  I like the fact that my car is in the background over his shoulder. not the van.
Lost for 3 days in the woods after wondering away from his Boy Scout troop at a Regional Jamboree in the backcountry of the Uinta Mountains in Northern Utah, this 13 year old boys is found unharmed and is quickly transported to the hospital.  This story gained much national attention during the days he was missing and was shot freelance, bought by the AP, and published on many newspapers' front page around the country including the San Diego Union Tribune.  He was hiding, not lost.
Mormon-Filmmaker Dave Hunter enters the 5th Annual LDS Film Festival in Jan. 2006. I was assigned by the New York Times to photograph the festival that is scheduled to coincide with the much more well known Sundance Film Festival. Many high budget films with Mormon themes and values are produced locally by the LDS church.
"7 Habits of Successful People" author Steven Covey II, left, poses with his grandson and quarterback Steven Covey IV, right, after a high school football.  I spent the day photographing Covey II on assignment for the USA Today on a story about his recently released book "The 8th Habit".

"Is the 8th Habit not telling everybody everything you know in your first book?"

County Search and Rescue divers and personnel retrieve the body of Ashton Hobbs, 23, from an irrigation canal in farmland near Lehi, Utah.  Brothers Bryon, 21, and Ashton drowned while attempting to scuba dive inside a concrete irrigation tunnel that crosses a ravine at a depth 100 feet below the surface. This image was shot while on assignment for the Associated Press.

VOIP, voice over internet protocol, telephone service is introduced and Eric Goode of Park City is one of the first to sign up.  The internet based service allows cell phone and land-line home phones to operate by transmitting over the internet.  This image was shoot on assignment for The USA Today and was published on the business section front page.
Just because you never heard of these guys doesn't mean they aren't LOUD!  Angels and Airwaves played at a private party held by AT&T for the USA Team members training at the Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista.  I photographed the event on assignment for Corporate and Olympic Sponsors division of Getty Images.
Protesting illegal immigration into this country Mila Stricker, right, and Darlene Muscelman, left, hold signs and encourage drivers passing the Governor's Mansion to honk their horns. An estimated 35,000 people marched through the streets to the Capitol Building in separate and equally peaceful civil protests concerning immigration into the United States in May 2006.  750,000 people protested in Los Angeles that same day for the same reason so there wasn't much national interest in this little protest in Utah.

Auctioneer Blaine Parker directs competitive bidding for leasing of mineral rights on 305,000 acres of land in central Utah controlled by the Bureau of Land and Management.  This image was shot on assignment for the Associated Press.
